#WOW2025 | Week 28 | Can you use Dynamic Color Ranges?

Introduction

With the release of Tableau 2025.2, it’s time to test out its powerful new capabilities!

This week, we’re tackling the new Dynamic Color Range feature using data from Japan’s House of Councillors elections.

The basic requirements cover the fundamentals. For the bonus, we’ll address a practical issue you’ll almost certainly encounter when you try to use this feature in a real-world scenario, giving you the solution you’ll need.

I hope you enjoy it. Good luck!

Requirements

BASIC

  • Dashboard size: 1000px by 800px
  • Create a map view showing voter turnout for Japan’s House of Councillors elections by prefecture.
  • Create a filter that allows the user to select a single election year.
  • Use the Dynamic Color Range feature so that the color legend dynamically updates based on the user’s prefecture selection.
  • Feel free to use your preferred color scheme and formatting. (As a reference, I uses #E15759 and #A0CBE8).

Bonus

You may have noticed that once the dynamic color range is activated by a selection, resetting it to the default view (based on all prefectures) requires the user to manually select all marks in the view. The goal of this bonus challenge is to improve the user experience by implementing a dedicated “Reset” button.

  • Create a button to reset the color range to be based on all prefectures for the selected year.
  • Display a text label that is only visible when a prefecture is selected, indicating that the color range is currently dynamic.

Dataset

The dataset for this challenge originates from e-Stat (Japan’s official government statistics portal), and has been slightly modified to be easier to work with in Tableau. Please download the prepared file from Google Drive to get started.
