2024 Week 24 | Power BI: Get creative with the Power BI Core Visuals team

Introduction

Welcome back to Workout Wednesday! This week’s challenge is purely dataviz – there is no data transformation involved. You have the pleasure of either recreating or making over the stunning sample report provided by the Power BI core visuals team.

This report is beautiful to look at and was built to demonstrate some of the newer features that the team has been working on. You may however notice the disclaimer in the report that says:

“This report does not exemplify data visualization best practices. Specific design requirements were taken into account during the creation of this report.”

Take a look at the report and see if you can point out some possible improvements. I’ll start by pointing out the first thing I always notice – is all of the font big enough to read (min 12pt)?Check out Meagan’s blog to read more about data visualization and accessibility best practices in Power BI.

Find the data and instructions to complete the challenge below, and as always, have fun!

Requirements

Option 1: Build one (or all) visuals from scratch

  1. Use the starter Power BI desktop file that contains sample data.
  2. Explore the data model and try to understand what’s going on in the data and with the calculations.
  3. Add visuals to the canvas. Be sure to use the:
    • new card visual
    • 100% stacked area chart
    • matrix
  4. Add any other design elements that you’d like
  5. Ensure that all visuals meet the minimum standards of having alt text, that the tab order in your report makes sense, and that your color choices meet the minimum contrast standards.
  6. As always, mix up the design in any way you see fit! This should be fun!

Option 2: Do a dataviz and accessibility makeover

  1. Use the completed solution file as a starting point.
  2. Explore the data and what’s being displayed in the visuals.
  3. Think through changes you want to make. If they’re big visual level changes, it might help to sketch out your new design. If they’re accessibility-related, list all of the attributes you want to check to ensure the report is accessible.
  4. Start tinkering! Play around with the formatting of one or all visuals until you end up with a report you’re happy with.
  5. Ensure that all visuals meet the minimum standards of having alt text, that the tab order in your report makes sense, and that your color choices meet the minimum contrast standards.
