Introduction
Hi to everybody! I am so happy to be among the new contributors for Workout Wednesday. I believe these kinds of challenges bring tremendous value to everyone who tries something new on a regular basis—you’ll learn so much!
We will look at the consumer price index for chocolate in the Euro region. As you might have all noticed, the prices have gone up significantly. But every month? This is what we are going to find out.
This, this week’s challenge focuses on customizing the look and feel of a line chart. We’ll explore using visual calculations for line charts to implement dynamic colors based on the previous value of a time series, experiment with dynamic marker styles, and let users decide how many details they want to see.
And this is how it should look like: Please note, that the visual calculations cannot be published to the web as of today.
Requirements
- Download the sample data from the Data World Website.
- Make sure that the visual calculations preview feature is turned on.
- Create a line chart that shows the development of the price index of chocolate over time.
- Add visual calculations to include the previous value, the change to the previous value and columns for only declined (vs previous month) and increased values (vs previous month), respectively.
- Format the lines and markers of the increased and declined values accordingly:
- Use different colors for increased vs. decreased values compared to previous month.
- Customize marker styles.
- Optional: Create bookmarks and include a bookmark slicer to let the user decide the information they want to see.
