2020 Week 32: COVID-19 New Case Trends

Introduction

This week I wanted to post a WOW challenge derived from a chart I’ve been reporting on for the past 7 months: a cartogram of states showing rolling-seven day average of new COVID-19 cases by state. For this challenge you will use data from Tableau’s COVID-19 Data Hub. I picked this challenge because working with this data is extremely challenging. And I am hoping by creating this challenge participants will learn how to use the data and grow data fluency in working with COVID-19 data.

Requirements

  • Dashboard Size: 900px by 700px
  •  Use the People Positive Case Count field to calculate the new cases for each state for each day.
  • Calculate the rolling seven-day new case counts for each state.
  • Plot the seven-day average of newly reported COVID-19 cases by state.
  • Be sure to add a line underneath each of the area trends.
  • Label the maximum value for each state.
  • Add a label for each state.
  • Use 1 sheet.
  • Format tooltips
  • Match formatting.

Dataset

This week uses the COVID-19 data from Tableau’s COVID-19 Data Hub. Download the .hyper file from data.world
