Introduction
When faced with a dashboard, I like to guide the user to the things that need attention. What better way to do that with big red alerts?
This week’s challenge utilizes a new feature in Sigma that allows you to use conditional formatting to change the background color of a container. Let’s dig in and see how this can be used in workbooks.

Note: You will only have view access to WOW Workbooks, Folders, and Workspaces, not edit access. Please create your WOW Workbooks under “My Documents.” We suggest creating a folder to organize all your workbooks.
Requirements
- Get your data set, add it to a source tab
- Workout Wednesday > 2025W51 – Cannot be Contained > 2025W51 – Food Truck Data Model > Food Truck Orders
- Add calcs
- Total COGS: Cost of Goods USD * Quantity
- Profit: Price – Total COGS
- Duplicate your table, name one “Food Truck Orders – Filterable”, and name the other Food Truck Orders – Medians
- Add summary calcs to compare against
- Group by Truck Brand Name
- Add calculations to the group
- Sum of Quantity
- Sum of Profit
- Margin: Profit / Price
- Add summary calcs to the table
- Median Quantity Sold by Truck: Median(Sum of Quantity)
- Median Profit by Truck: Median(Sum of Profit)
- Median Margin by Truck: Median(Margin)
- Create your visualizations
- Create 3 containers and add a KPI visualization inside each. One for each of the following metrics:
- Sum of Quantity
- Sum of Profit
- Margin
- Create 3 containers and add a KPI visualization inside each. One for each of the following metrics:
- Create a Date and Truck Brand Name control
- Date should filter both tables: Food Truck Orders – Medians and Food Truck Orders – Filterable
- Truck Brand Name should ONLY filter Food Truck Orders – Filterable
- Under properties, uncheck “Allow multiple selection”, otherwise you may compare the median of individual stores against the total of multiple stores
- Add Conditional Formatting to each of the containers
- We only really need to highlight red if we are below the Median, so the formula will look like this: Quantity Sold/Sum of Quantity < Food Truck Orders – Medians/Median Quantity Sold by Truck
