2025 Week 2 | Power BI: Ice Thickness Infographic with Core Visuals

Introduction

It’s cold and snowy in many places in the United States this week. So we are making an infographic to remind people about ice safety. It’s important to check that ice can support the weight of your desired outdoor activity, so you won’t fall through or harm the area.

Let’s use Power BI to communicate the recommended minimum ice thickness. And to up the level of creativity required, let’s use only core visuals. You will likely need to implement a few workarounds to achieve your desired formatting.

Your version doesn’t have to look exactly like mine. Feel free to put your own spin on it.

Requirements

  1. Use a background image related to cold weather or ice.
  2. Use only core visuals in your report (images, buttons, and other standard Power BI objects are fine, just no custom visuals).
  3. Include both images and text to indicate what can be supported by the specified ice thickness. (I got my images from www.svgrepo.com, but you can use whatever images you prefer).
  4. Use a visual to indicate the ice thickness where increasing ice thickness causes the mark position to be further down on the page; e.g., 6 inches of ice has a larger y-position value than 4 inches and 4 inches has a larger y-position value than 2 inches.
  5.  Label the ice thickness at each depth/position represented.

Dataset

Copy and paste the data below into Power BI.
