2024 Week 2 | Sigma: Can you recreate this drillable bar chart?

Introduction

Let’s keep the new year rolling! I’m Eric, and I’m really excited to host this week. Thanks to all the folks who have participated so far, we look forward to seeing more of your submissions this week.

Today, I’m excited to give you a challenge that gets you familiar with drilling in Sigma. Let’s see how deep it goes!

Need access to Sigma?

Note: You will only have view access to WOW Workbooks, Folders, and Workspaces, not edit access. Please create your WOW Workbooks under “My Documents.” We suggest creating a folder to organize all your workbooks.

Ignore that the white backgrounds don't show up, the gif didn't process them correctly.

Requirements

  1. Create a horizontal bar chart that shows the Sum of Profit by Region (to start)
    • Data source: Sigma Sample Database > Retail > Plugs_Electronics > PLUGS_ELECTRONICS_HANDS_ON_LAB_DATA
      • In a production situation, you would likely create a ‘Data’ tab to store a reference to a source table, but that’s not necessary here.
    • Note that ‘Profit’ is hiding in the ‘Metrics’ tab.
  2. Create a control for ‘Show Profit By:’
    • Update Drill Categories to include all the drill options you see in the control
    • Point the controls at the appropriate target.
  3. Test by double clicking on one of the bars to drill into your chart
  4. Tweak your bar chart formatting until it looks like what you see in the image.
    • Remove X-axis grid lines
    • Remove X-axis labels
    • Add value labels
    • Format Profit to SI units

Dataset

Sigma Sample Database > Retail > Plugs_Electronics > PLUGS_ELECTRONICS_HANDS_ON_LAB_DATA
