2023 Week 24 | Power BI: Visualize Change Between Two Points in Time with Deneb

Introduction

This week we are continuing our viz efforts inspired by the 1 dataset 100 visualizations project, presented by the Data Viz Project. Last week, Shannon challenged us to create as many visuals as possible using the core visuals available in Power BI.

This week’s challenge is to create visuals using the Deneb custom visual. I have chosen 3 visuals that can’t be created using core visuals and would be difficult to create using free custom visuals outside of Deneb. These visuals use the visual properties of length and position to emphasize the change in values within each country.

Requirements

  • Enter the source data in Power Query. The sample dataset from the Data Viz Project team contains data on UNESCO World Heritage sites for 3 countries, for 2 years.A table labeled World Heritage Sites containing 3 countries and 2 years.
  • In Power Query, unpivot the year columns and rename the resulting columns to Year and Sites.
  • Create a lollipop chart using Deneb.
    • Ensure that the countries are displayed in the same order as the example.
    • Display the percent change in number of sites from 2004 to 2022 underneath the lollipops for each country.
    • Display the country name underneath the percent change.
  • Create a slope graph using Deneb.
    • Display the country name and percent change in number of sites from 2004 to 2022 at the end of each line.
    • Display horizontal gridlines every 5 units
    • Display a vertical line for each year
  • Create a dumbbell plot
    • Abbreviate the country names as shown in the example
    • Use different colors for each year
    • Display the legend at the top of the graph
    • Display horizontal gridlines every 5 units from 0 to 20

Dataset

This week’s data comes to us courtesy of the Data Viz Project, who retrieved the data from the UNESCO website. It can be accessed directly on the 1 dataset 100 visualizations site.

    how I can download the data as I am not able to do that with given web link,pls help!

    The data is a table with 3 rows of 3 columns. You just type it into Power BI using the Enter Data feature. There’s nothing to download.

    You can either take a screenshot of it, or publish to PowerBi.com and create a publish to web link.

    I’m not sure what you mean. Are you not seeing the visuals in the embedded report on this page, or are you experiencing an issue in Power BI desktop, or when you publish to the service? I’m seeing the report load on this page, so I’m looking for more info.
