2025 Week 3 | Power BI: Can you build a Voronoi?

Introduction

Welcome to week 3 of 2025 and this challenge we will be dipping our toes into Vega, a lower-level language than vega-lite.

This challenge is ideally suited to those that have dabbled in vega-lite – but don’t worry if you want to try your hand – there are a few templates to help get you started.

In this challenge we will be experimenting with voronoi transforms.

Voronois have many uses https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voronoi_diagram, for this challenge we will be depicting the locations of Public Toilets in Australia with the voronoi cells helping with indication of the nearest public toilet.

EXTRA CREDIT : Provide an option to enter geographic location and highlight cells with nearest public toilet. Create a zoomable and searchable map.

Requirements

  1. Obtain the data from https://data.gov.au/dataset/ds-dga-553b3049-2b8b-46a2-95e6-640d7986a8c1/distribution/dist-dga-34076296-6692-4e30-b627-67b7c4eb1027/details?q=
  2. Model the data
  3. Install Deneb custom visual from AppSource
  4. Place latitude, longitude and count of toilets in field well
  5. Aggregate data to manage row limit or override row limit in Formatting pane options
  6. Utilise the Vega documentation to create a voronoi, and/or leverage a voronoi template to get started : https://kerrykolosko.com/portfolio/coloured-voronoi/
  7. Make this data visualisation / report your own and tell your own story
