2021 Week 4 | Power BI: Drill Through

Introduction

Thanks to everyone who participated in Week 3 of #WorkoutWednesday – Power BI edition. If you are joining this week, you may want to revisit the first couple challenges as this week will continue to build on the data model we created in W01 and the basic KPI report that we built in W02 and W03. This week we are going to be adding in drill through capabilities to allow for further analysis of our NCAA Conference expenses and revenues.

Requirements

  • Create new tab called “School View.” Replace the [Conference Abb] fields in your bar charts with [School Abb].
  • Create drill through from your Summary View tab to your School View tab.
  • Add card to allow users to know what Conference they are viewing in the School View.
  • Make sure your year slicers are not synced between the two pages.
  • Figure out who contributed most the MAC losing so much money in 2016.

Dataset

This week uses a data set that breaks down NCAA athletic department expenses and revenues by year. You can get it here at data.world. This is the same data set that was used in W01, W02, and W03.

  1. Hey – you had a few options for sharing. You can take a screenshot and share the final solution as an image. You can share the link to your report if your tenant allows you to share publically. You can also make a gif of the final solution. Make sure to fill out the submission tracker under Track & Review if you decide to participate!

  2. Hello,
Thanks for the exercises. If you filter any year (for example 2010) on the school view tab and then go back to the summary view tab and filter all years and then use drill through, the school view tab filter will be unchanged (filter will be set at 2010, not at all the years). can we do that filter on the first tab affects the second tab’s filter, but the second tabs filter has no effect on the first tab filter?

  3. Hi,
I have a question. If I choose in summary view one year and drill trough School view then year filter show only one year not all. If i dont choose year in Summary view, then i can see all year choices in School view.
It’s possible to do like that, if i already in Summary view select one year and drill trough School view, filter activate on School view but i can select different year.

  4. Hi, I think your titles for the bar charts in the school tab screenshot should be changed to “School” to reflect the [school abb] field being used!

Thank you for making these weekly challenges. I’ve learned a lot with the solution videos. I hope you’ll continue making them.

  6. Even though I disabled the sync slicer option, the year still got filtered in the schools view when using a filter on the main page. I had to disable “Keep all filter” in the drill through option to make it work as in the video! Just a heads up 🙂

  7. Thanks for the tip on the “Keep all filter” toggle, I was having the same issue.

  8. Hi,

Hope that somebody can help me. I do not have the Drill-Through option in my report. I have already published it on Power BI Service and clicked all googleble check boxes. Please help

  9. I am experiencing the same issues, when I right click, there is not an option to select “Drill Through” despite setting it up correctly on the School View Report
