Introduction
For basketball fans in the United States, March is a special time. It is when 64 of the best college basketball teams match up in a single elimination tournament to see who is the NCAA Men’s Basketball champion. The early rounds of the tournament provide long days of basketball games across several TV stations. This is why it is called March Madness. There is nothing quite like a huge underdog taking down a top ranked team.
We are continuing the color theme in April and this challenge will use several matrix color options. As a fan of March Madness, I wanted to do incorporate it into this challenge. What I found was I did not see any good examples of tournament brackets being created in Power BI.
While this could likely be done using a custom visual, I wanted to keep the visualization more simple. As such, I have developed a dataset that will allow you to create a bracket in Power BI, showing the results of the last 8 teams left in the NCAA Men’s basketball tournament.
While there is a mathematical way to identify the row in the dataset as well as the winner, I was not out to torture anyone this week, so I decided to include it. Feel free to write the measures necessary to do this for extra credit.
Requirements
LET’S START THE MADNESS!!!
- Download the excel file from data.world.
- Load the data into Power BI — Consider how you’d like to join the data
- Using the matrix visual, recreate the NCAA Men’s Basketball Elite Eight Bracket
- The champion does not need to be visualized with the rest of the bracket. Feel free to show the champion using whatever method you choose.
- Pay close attention to all color options including background, text color, text on/off, as well as conditional color formatting
- Have fun with the challenge! See if you can do any additional interesting things with the formatting.
