Introduction
Welcome back to Workout Wednesday!
This week we’re collaborating with the Tableau team to create a waterfall pipeline using Salesforce data. Lorna Brown, the creator of the challenge is attending Saleforce’s Dreamforce conference, hence the nature of the challenge.
We’re building a waterfall chart using the Simple Waterfall custom visual by Datanomy Limited.
This week’s workout can be done in Tableau, Power BI, or Saleforce CRM analytics. If you complete the challenge in more than one tool, pat yourself on the back and share the comparisons on social media!
Requirements
- Get data from a Salesforce Developer Account or Data.World
- Sign up for a Salesforce Developer Account and then use the Salesforce Objects connector in Power BI desktop to connect to the system generated sample Opportunity table
or
- Use the web connector in Power BI to get data from Data.World (reminder – you need a free Data.World account to use the connector)
- Transform the data
- Keep only the columns you need
- Ensure the data for the Closed Lost stage is negative (you can do this in either Power Query or DAX)
- Create a stage sort column (you can do this in the source table or by creating a dimension)
- Create a hex code column for each stage (I used the Hex Color Picker Chrome extension to get the hex codes from Lorna’s Tableau viz)
- Create a running total measure
- Create your report
- Import the Simple Waterfall custom visual and add your total by Stage
- Use conditional formatting to format the bar colors based on your hex color column
- Add a report page tooltip
- Set your tab order and add alt text to ensure your report is accessible to those using screen readers
- Ensure font sizes are > 12pt and color contrast ratio is at least 3:1
- Add any other visuals that speak to you as you explore this dataset! Make the design your own and have fun with it!

This challenge uses a Salesforce data set that you can get using a Salesforce Developer account and the Salesforce Object connector, or by connecting to the data on Data.World
Note that if you create a Salesforce Developer account, your sample data may look different. The structure of the opportunity table will be the same, but the actual data may differ.
