#WOW2022 W40: Power BI: Field Parameters with Conditional Formatting

Introduction

This month we are getting the #WorkoutWednesday community involved in the challenges with Community Month. Each week we’re going to have an outstanding member of our community present a challenge. This week we have one of the best out there, Sekou Tyler, gracing us with his presence. Sekou is an accomplished BI professional and Senior Manager of Data Engineering at Lovelytics. Sekou’s many talents include Tableau, Alteryx, Google Data Studio, and Quicksight – but today he’s here to flex his Power BI muscles. Take it away, Sekou!

We first looked at field parameters in week 21. This week we want to add another parameter and add some conditional formatting to our reports!

If you haven’t seen it yet, Field Parameters were released in the May 2022 version of Power BI. This feature allows you to select what fields you’re using in visuals via a report slicer. You can see how I have done this in the example below.

Requirements

  • Enable the preview feature, Field Parameters
  • Create a Total Sales measure
  • Create a new field parameter that includes Total Sales and Margin %
  • Include the parameter field slicer in the report and set to single select
  • Convert the existing visuals to use the new parameters
  • Create a matrix table and add conditional formatting for each measure

Dataset

This challenge uses the Tableau SuperStore dataset provided on data.world. You will need to log in to data.world to retrieve the data, but accounts are free.
