2023 Week 10 | Power BI: Mapping Cities with Michelin Star Restaurants

Introduction

Note from the Editor: This week we have our first bilingual WoW for Power BI! Below you will find both the Spanish and English instructions for the exercise. Please note that the solution video is in Spanish, but auto-generated captions are available in English. If you enjoyed this, please let us know in the comments or on social media. We now return you to your regularly scheduled content of getting back to some mapping basics.

English

We are going to create a simple report page in Power BI Desktop with the data of the restaurants that have 3 Michelin stars. We won’t include all 3-star restaurants for this exercise, only with those that appear on page 1 of the results. You can enhance your version with the remaining data if you wish.

Requirements

English

  • Load the specified data from the website.
  • Rename the following columns: Column1 should be called Name. Column 4 should be called Reservable.
  • Split the city and country into separate columns.
  • Extract the price and restaurant type data into separate columns.
  • Replace any null values in the Reservable column with “Ask”.
  • Create a table containing the restaurant name, type, price, and reservability.
  • Create a slicer to allow users to choose a country.
  • Create a map that shows the city where a selected restaurant is located.
Important Note

The Shape Map visual is in preview and must be enabled in Power BI Desktop. To enable the Shape Map, select File > Options and Settings > Options > Preview Features, and select the Shape Map Visual check box.

Dataset

English

A dataset (first page only): https://guide.michelin.com/en/es/restaurants/3-stars-michelin

Note: Depending on which URL you use (English or Spanish), you may get different restaurants on your first page of results. This is expected. Just use what is returned to you. Both urls should return data from multiple countries.

Share

After you finish your workout, share on Twitter using the hashtags #WOW2023 and #PowerBI, and tag @excelcontatic@MMarie, @shan_gsd, and @KerryKolosko. Also make sure to fill out the Submission Tracker so that we can count you as a participant this week in order to track our participation throughout the year.

  1. Hello
i am new to power bi and i want to know that if i have solve particular challenge then where i should upload and where i can find others work of that particular challenge i just don’t know will you help me

    1. Hi Sakshi,

The purpose of the exercise is to practice Power BI, so it’s not a requirement to upload and share. If you decide to upload, you can publish to web in the Power BI service. After you have published to web, you can share in the Power BI data stories gallery.

You can also just work in Power BI desktop and share screenshots in Twitter, LinkedIn, or your social media site of choice. Wherever you share, use the hashtag #WoW2023 so that people can find your work! If you’re searching for people’s work, use the hashtag on Twitter, LinkedIn, or the Data Stories gallery. I hope this helps!
