Introduction
Welcome back to Workout Wednesday! This week we will use Power BI to build an interactive resume. This challenge is for a few different audiences.
1) Job seekers – feel free to use this template, plug in your information, make design tweaks, and post this to your portfolio!
2) Data vizzers – use the starter .pbix file that contains the data model, plug in your information, and design a stunning resume. The design options are endless!
3) Power BI whizzes – build your Power BI resume from scratch. Design the data model and visuals in any way you see fit!
The goal this week is to build a resume that highlights your skills and will help you land that next role!
Requirements
Job Seekers
- Download the solution file.
- Open Power BI, select transform data, and paste your data into Power Query. Each step that requires data entry is marked with an ⓘ symbol.
- All queries require data entry except “Work Skills (do not touch!)”
- If you don’t have anything to enter, for example, if you do not have a blog, you can leave that cell blank.
- The skills you enter in the Work History query must match the skills you enter in the Skills query exactly.
- Close Power Query and work on the visuals!
- Change the profile picture. You can either upload an image or link to your LinkedIn photo.
- Change the background image to suit your style.
- Tweak the images and visuals in any way you see fit.
- Note: Use the “Save to PDF” option in LinkedIn for an easy, downloadable version of your resume. I used OneDrive for business to create my download link.
Data vizzers
- Download the .pbix file containing the data model
- Open Power Query and paste in your data.
- All queries require data entry except “Work Skills (do not touch!)”
- The skills you enter in the Work History query must match the skills you enter in the Skills query exactly. This ensures proper cross-filtering between work history and skills.
- Close and load the data to the model.
- Start vizzing!
- I used PowerPoint for my background and to create my icons.
- If you’d like to download the icons I used, you can find them in OneDrive.
- I used the new “Accessible Orchid” theme along with the Colour Contrast Analyzer app as I worked.
- Use as many (or as few) tabs as you need to showcase your skills!
Power BI Whizzes
- Open a blank Power BI file and either get data from a source you have on hand, or, enter data
- Include data that is relevant to showcase your skills. I included data on:
- Work experience
- Skills
- Certifications
- Education
- Volunteering
- Other basic info such as social media profiles, how to contact me, etc.
- Build your data model in a way that you can include at least one interactive element in your report.
- Build your visuals!
- The report provided is just a sample – choose visuals, themes, etc. that represent you and your personal brand.
Dataset
There is no standard dataset this week. Amend the applied steps in Power Query to paste your data directly into the template. If you’re creating your own data model, feel free to bring data in from wherever you see fit.
Share
After you finish your workout, share on Twitter using the hashtags #WOW2022 and #PowerBI, and tag @MMarie, @shan_gsd, @KerryKolosko. Also make sure to fill out the Submission Tracker so that we can count you as a participant this week in order to track our participation throughout the year.
